Planning Your Planting: Timing for Gardening and Landscaping

Planning Your Planting: Timing for Gardening and Landscaping

Are you thinking about doing any gardening or landscaping in your yard in Maryland this year? If so, now is the perfect time to start planning for it. As we move into spring and summer, you should be aware of the timing involved with putting plants in the ground to ensure that your garden and landscaping end up taking root and growing in well. Garden and landscaping plants have somewhat different scheduled for planting, so let’s take a closer look at when you should plan your planting.

Gardens

Spring PlantingThere’s nothing quite like seeing a bunch of flowers blooming in your garden once the weather starts to get nice in the spring. There are all types of flowers that flourish in the springtime here in Maryland. According to Plant Native, wild geranium, round-lobed hepatica, Virginia blue flag, arrow alum and blue vervain flowers are all excellent options and can be planted as soon as the ground has thawed and temperatures remain above about 40 degrees.

Landscaping

As far as landscaping goes, you will also have many options when it comes to planting trees and shrubs throughout your yard. Some trees, like red maple, black birch and white and green ash trees, are better suited for fall planting versus spring, but flowering dogwood, sweetbay magnolia and redbud trees all are fine to plant and look their best during the spring and summer. In the waning days of winter, plan out where you want to put them in your yard and think about any other shrubs, flowers or other plants you want to include in that area. This is the time to plan out your landscaping to make sure the entire exterior landscaping of your home looks incredible.
