Winter Is Coming: What to Expect from the Cold Season

As the fall progresses, we move closer and closer to the snow and cold of winter. But, as we all know, not every winter is the same as the last, so what do the prognosticators have to say about this winter coming up? How cold will it be? How much can snow can’t we expect?

Let’s dive into some expectations.

Maryland Winter ForecastUnfortunately, there seem to be differing opinions on the matter. The National Weather Service is predicting a somewhat mild winter, according to Patch, and we may have La Niña to thank. The counterpart phenomenon to the infamous El Niño, the presence of La Niña tends to point to warmer and drier winters.

On the other side of the argument, meteorologist Judah Cohen of The Washington Post believes that chilling temperatures will hit much of the country, with frostier than normal conditions running from the Dakotas down to Georgia.

If we do hit receive blisteringly cold temperatures, the Farmers’ Almanac believes that they will hit us later in the season. It’s predicting that February will be exceptionally frigid, with temperatures as low as -40 degrees F in some northern states.

The potential for freezing cold temperatures is high, as most experts agree that cold temps will indeed be a feature of the season in parts of the Great Lakes, Midwest, New England and the Northeast, but may even dip down to the Gulf Coast.

As far as Maryland is specifically concerned, we should be looking at average temperatures in November, says the Old Farmer’s Almanac – a different publication than the Farmers’ Almanac. By the time we hit December and January, we should see temps noticeably drop with intermittent snow. The Old Farmer’s Almanac also suggests the snowiest parts of the season will come in late January and last through mid-February.
